Liverpool-based artist Pet Snake is the solo project of singer-songwriter Evelyn Halls, creating music that feels raw in a way you can’t really fake. It sits somewhere between indie-folk, early 2000s emo, and grunge-pop, with stripped-back production, gritty edges, and vocals that feel almost too honest at times.
It’s the kind of project that doesn’t try to over-explain itself. It just exists exactly as it is. A little melancholic, a little nostalgic, and deeply personal in a way that makes you feel like you’re overhearing something rather than being presented with it.
Themes of getting older, friendship, and vulnerability run throughout her work, but nothing feels overly polished or packaged. That’s what makes it land. There’s a looseness to it, a willingness to sit in the uncomfortable parts, that gives the music its weight.
Pet Snake performed as part of our Sound City showcase in 2023, which feels very in line with the kind of artist John Sweeney was always drawn to.
Not because it was loud or obvious.
But because it was real.
He had a way of finding artists who were doing something a little different, something a little more personal, and backing them early. Artists who didn’t need to shout to be heard.
Pet Snake feels like that kind of project.
