“I’ve been around forever as a music supervisor, collaborating with some amazing composers for film scores,” Houlihan notes, “but as a composer myself, I’m new to the game. My work with Danny Saber and Jeff Cardoni on the score for the 2010-11 CBS drama The Defenders is my calling card. I take a lot of pride in what we accomplished over its one season.”

As a supervisor, Houlihan’s credits are indeed numerous, encompassing everything from the features Mr. Holland’s Opus and the documentary Waiting for “Superman” to the film version of What to Expect When You’re Expecting. “As a kid I discovered that the music element of a scene holds a lot of power,” he says. “Creating a score is my way to be involved in affecting other people and helping to give them a shared, human experience.”

Patience is a crucial element to getting into the game, he adds. “Overnight success is likely to be a 10-year process. I have many composer friends who have major talent and immense drive but their frustration with the game gnaws at them. But if you’re 25 years old, there’s plenty of time to embrace the apprentice role and develop your skills for a long career that will take you into your 70s.”
