SESAC’s Shun Ng Awarded 2016 Holly Prize at Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction Gala
Congratulations to SESAC affiliate Shun Ng who was presented with Songmasters' prestigious 2016 Holly Prize at the Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on June 9. The award was presented to the fingerstyle guitar virtuoso by music industry legend and 12-time Grammy Award-winner Peter Asher.
The Holly Prize was created as a tribute to the legacy of Buddy Holly, a Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee and recognizes breakthrough singer-songwriters whose work reflects Buddy Holly’s true, great, and original talent. Established in 2009, past winners include Ben Howard (2013), Emily King (2012), and Jenny O (2015). Presented in collaboration with and made possible by Songmasters, The Holly Prize is administered and juried by SongHall.
Born in Chicago, raised in Singapore, and currently residing in Boston, Shun Ng is known for his unique, mesmerizing style that infuses elements of rock, soul, funk, and blues. He has garnered acclaim for his flamboyant technique, soulful vocals, and hypnotic grooves, earning a spot on Improper Bostonian Magazine’s “Top 10 Local Acts That Rock” and winning the 2015 Boston Music Award for International Artist of the Year. While generally performing solo, Shun also performs as a duo with rock harmonica legend Magic Dick, one of the founding members of the J. Geils Band, and with his vocal group, Shun & The Shunettes.
As one of this generation's most dynamic and innovative performers, he came to the attention of 27-time Grammy® winner Quincy Jones, who said of Shun: “You won’t believe your eyes nor your ears, Shun belies all stereotypes, all premonitions. I was simply blown away by both his soul and his science – his creativity and his uniqueness are astounding.”
