NEW YORK – Songwriter/producer extraordinaires Bryan-Michael Cox and Nate “Danja” Hills shared top honors when both were named Songwriter of the Year at SESAC’s 11th annual New York Music Awards held May 10th at Manhattan’s gorgeous Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers. The shared Songwriter of the Year distinction marks a first for the awards event.
Cox also took home another of the evening’s big accolades, along with Jason Perry, earning the Song of the Year award for his smash hit, “Be Without You,” as recorded by Mary J. Blige.
Propelled by his songwriting and production work on Blige’s landmark album The Breakthrough, Cox realized another monumental year in music. The songwriter/producer, who has now claimed the SESAC Songwriter of the Year title for seven consecutive years, wrote the smash single, “Be Without You” (with fellow SESAC affiliate Jason Perry) for Blige who went on to dominate the airwaves for most of 2006 with the career-making song. Topping Billboard’s R&B Chart for a record-setting 15 consecutive weeks, the record went on to land top honors at the GRAMMY Awards where it was recognized as “Best R&B Song”.
With an array of hit songs including such chart-topping smashes as “SexyBack” and “My Love” for Justin Timberlake and “Promiscuous” and “Say It Right” for Nelly Furtado, Nate “Danja” Hills has seen his career skyrocket over the past year with no signs of slowing down. Now lending his songwriting and producing talents to upcoming projects by a diverse list of artists including Britney Spears, Duran Duran and Natasha Bedingfield, Hills has established himself as a new musical force to watch.
For the fifth consecutive year, SESAC Publisher of the Year honors went to WBM Music Corp.
In addition to Song, Songwriter and Publisher of the Year honors, SESAC gave the prestigious SESAC Legacy Award to legendary musician, legislative activist and Twisted Sister founder Dee Snider. The award celebrates Snider’s outstanding contribution to the Rock genre through his groundbreaking, multi-platinum work with Twisted Sister and beyond.
This year’s awards celebration was attended by more than 400 songwriters, publishers and industry professionals. Nate “Danja” Hills and Bryan-Michael Cox were among more than 50 songwriter and publisher award recipients in the categories of Pop, R&B/Hip-Hop, and Rock. The awards were sponsored by SPIN Magazine, Bed Head, Billboard Magazine, Kid Robot, Jolt Cola and Digiwaxx Media and Zune Lifestyle Marketing.
